DEXA Bone Densitometry

DEXA Bone Densitometry

What is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry), bone density scan, or bone mineral scan, is a safe and non-invasive imaging test that measures bone strength and calcium levels. It is most commonly performed on the hip, lumbar spine, or forearm.

This scan is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition where bones become thin, brittle, and more likely to fracture. A DEXA test can also assess your risk of future fractures and help your doctor monitor bone health over time.

At International Radiology Centre (IRC), we use advanced DEXA technology to provide accurate results in a comfortable environment.

Why Do You Need a Bone Density Scan?

  • A DEXA scan is commonly recommended for:
    • Women after menopause and men over 50
    • Patients with a family history of osteoporosis
    • People with fractures caused by minor injuries
    • Long-term use of medications such as steroids

Monitoring the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment

What Does the Procedure Involve?

During a digital mammogram:
  1. You will be asked to undress from the waist up and provided with a gown.
  2. Each breast will be gently positioned and compressed between two plates attached to the mammogram machine. Compression is important because it:
    • Prevents movement for a clearer image.
    • Spreads out breast tissue for better visibility.
    • Reduces the radiation dose.
  3. X-ray images are taken from different angles to provide a complete view.
  4. You may be asked to hold still or briefly stop breathing during the scan to avoid blurring.
  5. The same process is then repeated for the other breast.

While compression may feel slightly uncomfortable, it only lasts a few seconds and is essential for obtaining accurate results.

What Should You Tell Us Before the Scan?

  • Please inform our team if:
    • You have recently had a barium examination or received contrast material in a CT or nuclear medicine test (you may need to wait 10–14 days).
    • You are pregnant or suspect pregnancy.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Your DEXA scan will be straightforward and comfortable:
    1. You will lie on your back on the examination table.
    2. A support will be placed under the body part being scanned (usually the lower back, hip, or forearm).
    3. A scanning arm will pass over the area while low-dose X-rays measure bone density.
    4. The procedure is painless—you won’t feel anything during the scan.

Once complete, you can return to your normal daily activities immediately.

How Long Does It Take?

  • A DEXA bone densitometry scan typically takes 10–30 minutes, depending on the area being scanned.
