An Orthopantomogram (OPG) is a specialised dental X-ray that provides a complete panoramic view of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. It shows:

  • The condition of the teeth and jawbone.
  • The mandible (lower jaw) and maxilla (upper jaw).
  • The sinuses located in the upper jaw.
  • The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the joints connecting the jaw to the skull.

What Should You Tell Us Before the Scan?

Please inform our radiology team if you are:

  • Pregnant or suspect pregnancy – as precautions may be required.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

  1. You will be asked to place your chin on a rest.
  2. Your jaw is positioned using a small disposable plastic bite guide for stability.
  3. You will usually stand during the scan while the X-ray unit rotates around your head.
  4. The exposure lasts only a few seconds – it is completely painless, but you must remain still.
  5. If a lateral cephalogram is required, your head will be positioned in a special support to ensure accurate alignment.

With digital OPG technology, results are processed instantly, eliminating the need for traditional film development and reducing waiting times.
